Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry's favorite song to play FOTM?

I read recently in some book that Fire on the Mountain may have been Jerry's favorite song to play. I was watching a video from 4/27/77 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdO_CmfFKYE) and he was swaying and swinging his guitar and back and forth like he was really into it. Anybody have an opinion on this?

I don't buy that sorry. I'd be inclined to say it would be something he played in his solo band probably something he didn't even write. OR at least something like Sugaree that he played the death out of in both bands.

You would hope a musician of his ilk would choose a more interesting piece as his favorite being that Fire is monotonous effect ridden drivel with moron level lyrics that he regularly forgot. How about something beautiful like Eyes or Comes a Time or any number of his compositions.

no man you have it all wrong, at least for my opinion. From what I have read from interviews with the man I think he LOVED a song, the craft behind it and yeah something that spoke to him or as Hunter once said " Jerry loved a sad song it spoke to his character". Then going on that and what he chose to play in his solo band too I thought would mean something. F*ck I didn't know the guy personally just basing an instinct on what I've read and how I think he might have thought. None of us will really know unless he actually said it or someone he DID know says that he ever claimed to have a fav.

i'd say his favorite song was probably 'victim'...or maybe 'throwing stones' :)

I had a dream once where I was laying in my bed and woke up to Jerry sitting at my desk, streaming a show from the Archive. He was listening to Tennessee Jed and grinning widely. I said, "You really enjoy playing that song, don't you?" and he just looked at me and kept grinning.

I would think his favorites changed from night to night and time period to time period. As a musician, my favorite song is the one that came out best that particular evening - with good dynamics and singing/harmonies.

I read somewhere that his favorite song was Russian Lullabye. Not necessarily meaning favorite song *to play*, just favorite song. But I don't know where I read it. (Here, possibly.)

That's really funny - Jerry was listening to the archive?

It would make sense - the song, infectious and very singable, is also quite simple; it's literally two chords the entire song. so jerry was able to jam in a very open way without worrying where he was. interesting.

Ah, the gangster version. I remember seeing Mickey rap this song with Planet Drum for the first time, must have been 97 or so? I thought it was funny.

This version from the Marin County Collective is so ahead of it's time when I listen to it now. It sounds like the Beastie Boys or something.

That's interesting. Based on his burnout of the dead from time to time and his love of the motown covers with the JGB I would have thought one of those tunes would have been his favorite. With that said FOTM does have a signature Garcia sound

Looks to me like a high-energy, dancin' kind of night for Jerry - from the same show, he's movin' and groovin' to Scarlet Begonias: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMyaTJF_pLg

Somehow, my feeling is that Jerry had no singular favorite tune to play - whatever captured his fancy was on the playlist. Note all the wonderful material with Grisman very late in life, real quality playing.

Id say his favorite song was the one he was playing at any given point in time....
